I have been asked to write a column for C2E regarding the arena debate in Edmonton. To give you some context, I am an associate professor with the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta, and recently organized a conference in Edmonton on arenas and urban development. My work explores how cities leverage sports franchises and sports infrastructure. I have conducted facility tours, and/or variously interviewed mayors, urban planners, tourism and marketing leaders, community development officers, team owners, and facility operators in Baltimore, Cleveland, Columbus, Manchester, Melbourne, and Washington DC.....
