Martin Erat Signed - 7 year/31M deal
Former Red Deer Rebel, and memorial cup champ in 2001, is set for life.
Dave Poile did another great job. Signed a 26 year old who gives up 6 years of unrestricted free agency, heading into the prime of his career, to a respectable 4.5M/year deal.
CAREER NUMBERS
Perhaps a bit too much today, but given free agency, age, and most importantly length of contract - I'm a fan of this deal.

I think that this is the kind of contract that makes the Dustin Penner RFA signing more affordable, and says bad things about how much money Shawn Horcoff's going to be asking for.
Sorry, I meant to say "makes the Dustin Penner RFA signing seem more reasonable".
No.
Not at all.
Erat isn't going to get any better... he turns 27 before training camp starts. This was a career year for him...
And he was still a -, and still didn't break 60 points (nor has he ever).
Filtered numbers have him at a +4, and with pretty tough competition.
Still don't like it though.
Apparently the NHL isn't a fan of the deal either... TSN is reporting that it's been rejected by the league for violating the CBA.
As for what it all means, I have no idea.
I'm not sure I quite understand the explanation on TSN's site. If I read it correctly then Kiprusoff's contract violates the same principal.
